New York (FN), Sep. 24 – The Royal Government of Cambodia will continue to make efforts to reduce the poverty rate by attracting more investors in order to boost the national economy.

The premier spoke during his meeting with Cambodians living in the US and Canada on 23 September 2023.

"We are very proud that we ended the war in 1998. The poverty rate at that time was about 54 per cent, meaning 54 people were living below the poverty line, and the rate was dropped until 2017. The poverty rate has dropped to 9.4 per cent and has risen to 17 per cent due to COVID19. In addition, the living standards of the population has improved," Samdech Thipadei underlined.

The premier added that since 1998, the Royal Government has helped change the lives of people by elevating their living standards from poor to middle-class and wealthy because of the economic growth, which allows people to able to afford houses, motorcycles and cars.

Samdech Hun Manet underscored that it is not that Cambodia had no poor people, but at least those who more than 20 years ago were very poor, many of them have become middle class now, while the number of poor people still remains low. The government will try to keep the poverty rate even lower.

On the occasion, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet added that now Cambodian people have a lot of possibilities because they have jobs and income.
