Siem Reap (FN), Sep. 13 – Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen, the president of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), asked other political parties not to use the case of relocation of residents from Angkor site as an excuse to serve their political gains.

The premier spoke during a meeting with residents who voluntarily relocated from the Angkor area, held on Tuesday morning (Sep 13) in Siem Reap province.

“I would like to inform that this project aims to serve national interests, not for interests of political parties. Among these 594 families, there were 18 families, who were supported by Cambodian Youth Party’s president Pich Sros, refused to move out. Therefore, I advise him to stop this action as it is not a political issue, but the matter of social order in Siem Reap area,” the premier underlined.

In August 2022, minister of land management Chea Sophara in cooperation with relevant ministries and authorities organized a campaign to resolve the problem of illegal construction in the Angkor area and other regions. This campaign came after Cambodia received a red alarm from UNESCO to remove Angkor Wat from the World Heritage List.
