Phnom Penh (FN), Jun. 23 – FUNCINPEC Party, on Thursday, strongly condemned former CNRP leader Sam Rainsy for insulting Cambodia’s king Norodom Sihamoni.
The party also called on serious legal actions against the convict.
The statement came after Sam Rainsy recently posted on his Facebook page, an edited photo of the king attached with abusive language.
"A puppet king serving a dictator, a useless king," Rainsy wrote.
FUNCINPEC's statement said Rainsy’s post seriously affects the dignity and prestige of the king, the most revered individual in the Kingdom. His act violated article 7 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia, which states that the king shall be inviolable.
"FUNCINPEC and Cambodian people could not accept this ill-intended action."
Rainsy’s previous act of insulting the king was defined as a criminal offense under the provisions of Article 437 of the Penal Code, which could sentence him to four year’s imprisonment.
