UNITED NATIONS, May 11 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday called for Myanmar's return to peace and stability.
A one-year state of emergency was declared in Myanmar on Feb. 1 this year and the state power was handed over to the Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing, chair of newly formed State Administration Council.
In a UN statement, Guterres also encourages the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to swiftly follow through on its own commitments, and the international community to support regional efforts. He also calls on the international community to respond to the increased humanitarian needs, said the statement.
The secretary-general's special envoy for Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, is in the region and continues to engage intensively with a range of key stakeholders.
