JAKARTA, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's COVID-19 cases rose by 949 within one day to 21,745, Achmad Yurianto, a Health Ministry official, said at a press conference here on Saturday.
The death toll in the country rose by 25 to 1,351, he added.
Jakarta, home to some 10 million people, suffers the highest number of deaths totaling 501, followed by East Java 271, West Java 127, Central Java 70, Banten 66, South Sulawesi 61, South Kalimantan 58 and the rest recorded in other areas.
The pandemic has spread to all the 34 provinces in the country.
Authorities have been conducting rapid tests in areas where cases were detected, and ordering the public to always wear masks to curb the spread.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has prohibited the mass exodus tradition, locally known as "mudik," for the Islamic post-fasting festivity Eid al-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan.
The government has announced that the Islamic celebration will fall on Sunday. Enditem
