NICOSIA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Twelve Israelis were arrested Wednesday over an alleged gang-rape of a British woman in the Cypriot resort town of Ayia Napa.
The 19-year-old woman filed a complaint at a local police station on Wednesday morning, claiming that the suspects raped her in a hotel the night before, local media reported.
A Cypriot police source told reporters that the case is still under early investigation and it is unclear how many suspects are implicated.
Israel's Foreign Ministry was aware of the case and diplomats were allowed access to the detained Israelis, the ministry said in a statement.
It's believed that the suspects will appear in a Famagusta district court on Thursday for a custody hearing.
Ayia Napa, located on the eastern side of the Mediterranean island, is popular among young tourists for its beaches and nightlife.
