WASHINGTON, June 24 (CGTN) -- U.S. President Donald Trump has no plans to meet with the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un when he travels to the Republic of Korea (ROK) over the weekend after attending a G20 summit in Japan, a U.S. senior administration official said on Monday.
Asked by reporters whether Trump would travel to the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas during the visit, the official declined to comment on Trump's schedule.
Trump said on Monday he has sent the DPRK leader a "very friendly letter" in response to birthday greetings he received last week from Kim.
The exchange of letters comes as the two countries remain at odds over the future of the DPRK's nuclear program and before Trump leaves on Wednesday for an Asia trip that will include a stop in the ROK.
The U.S. intelligence community does not believe Kim is ready to denuclearize, U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lieutenant General Robert Ashley told Fox News in an interview on Monday.
"We still continue to assess within the IC (intelligence community) that Kim Jong Un is not ready to denuclearize," Ashley said.
U.S. Special Representative for the DPRK Stephen Biegun will travel to the ROK this week ahead of Trump's visit to the ally nation.
Biegun will be in Seoul from Thursday to Sunday and meet with ROK officials before joining Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for Trump's two-day visit on Saturday and Sunday.
