Phnom Penh (FN), June 29 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, on Friday, presided over a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the 6th flyover bridge at Cham Chao roundabout near Phnom Penh International Airport.

The project is constructed by Overseas Cambodian Investment Company (OCIC) on a budget of approximately $22 million and is expected to complete in 30 months, according to Facebook of Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday.

The construction of the Sky Bridge at the roundabout could significantly ease the traffic congestion, especially at Cham Chao roundabout; it will serve as an important economic corridor for both domestic and international exports through National Road No. 3 and 4.

The premier is proud of the achievement of the new 6th flyover bridge in Phnom Penh. He also mentioned the development of the city over the last 39 years under the leadership of Cambodian People’s Party, transforming from a ghost city after 1979 to a lively city with the continued increase of Khmer population, number of vehicles, and the booming of infrastructure. However, the setbacks that Phnom Penh faces following these rapid growths include traffic jams, drainage system, and waste issues.

Issues could not stop Cambodia from developing. Thanks to Japan on behalf of our development partner, the drainage system in Phnom Penh has improved and that the government is working hard to solve this issue and other challenges.

Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the kingdom will have more flyover bridge on top of the current five, including Kbal Tnorl , Steung Mean Chey, 7 Makara, 5 Makara (Institute of Technology of Cambodia), and Psar Dey Huy.

The premier called on citizens who are living nearby the constructed area not to complain about the noise, the mechanical breakdown, and the traffic jams during the construction period.

Furthermore, Phnom Penh Capital Hall is addressing the settlement issues at Steung Mean Chey Dumping Canal. The authorities allowed the affected citizens to legally settle there after fixing the drainage system for citizens’ safety and wellbeing, according to Prime Minister Hun Sen.
