Phnom Penh (FN), June 26 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen called on people to be educated on drug and consider it everyone’s issue, through a letter written on 22 June but released on International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 26 June 2018.
Prime Minister Hun Sen also asked people to continue to support victims' families and report any drug offenses to local authorities to take action in a timely and effective manner.
The premier called on stakeholders to further strengthen their responsibility to educate people in order to prevent them from being lured into drugs. In case of suspicion or realizing that their children are involved in drug cases, family members shall stop them immediately to avoid health hazards and legal convictions.
The government, in 2018, has educated 1,638,494 people on the negative effects of drugs, treated 7,056 drug abusers, crackdown 2,870 drug cases and arrested 5,702 suspects.
The General Assembly recognized that the world drug problem continues to constitute a serious threat to public health, the safety and well-being of humanity, in particular young people, and the national security and sovereignty of States, and that it undermines socio-economic and political stability and sustainable development.
On 7 December 1987, the General Assembly decided to observe 26 June as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
