TBILISI, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili Wednesday announced resignation in Tbilisi.

At a special briefing held at the governmental administration in the capital, Giorgi Kvirikashvili announced his decision to resign, hinting it was due to the "differences of opinion" with the ruling party's chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili.

"Yesterday there was a meeting of the ruling political party, during which different points of view have been outlined between me and the ruling team, specifically concerning the economic policy pursued by the government under my leadership," said Kvirikashvili, adding that in recent months his opinion differed from the party chairman's opinion on a number of fundamental issues.

"I think today is the time for the chairman of the party to take the opportunity to lead his team on the basis of his views," said Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

Former Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has returned as the leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party in recent month. He founded the ruling Georgian Dream party in 2012 to oppose Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement party in Georgia's parliamentary elections of 2012.
