Phnom Penh (FN), June 13 – Cambodian Ministry of Defense issued a press release to gravely condemn the US’s Treasury Sanction on Cambodian General Hing Bun Hieng, Head of the Prime Minister Bodyguard Unit and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
“The Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense regretted, denied, and condemned the US Department of the Treasury’s sanction on Cambodian General Hing Bun Hieng by freezing his assets,” the ministry wrote in the press release on Wednesday.
The US Department of the Treasury wrote Tuesday that they sanctioned Cambodian General Hing Bun Hieng for being the leader of an entity involved in serious human rights abuse, pursuant to Executive Order 13818, which targets perpetrators of corruption and serious human rights abuse and corruption.
Ministry of Defense considered the US’s sanction a violation on Cambodian law, as a sovereign state.
The sanction is unjust and made without proper grounds. It is a dull decision made by the US which Cambodia could not accept.
The ministry also appealed for the US to immediately stop sanctions on Cambodia senior military officer without proper grounds.
