Phnom Penh (FN), June 11 — Minister of Commerce Pan Sorasak requested the Thai side to review the sale of Thai rice using Cambodian Angkor Wat Temple as a symbol on their rice sacks in Montreal, Canada.
The request was made during a meeting with Thai Ambassador to Cambodia Panyarak Poolthup on Monday at the Ministry of Commerce in Phnom Penh.
Thai ambassador responded that Thai authorities, in collaboration with Canadian Trade Representatives, had notified relevant parties to prevent the circular of rice products with Cambodian Angkor Wat symbol in Montreal.
Recently, Cambodian people reacted strongly to Thai rice using Angkor Wat Temple as a symbol on the rice sack with the written phrase in Khmer language meaning "special fragrant rice".
Following the reactions, the Ministry of Commerce did research and found that such rice sacks are indeed circulating in some markets in Montreal, Canada.
The Ministry immediately contacted the Thai side to take instant action, as the act misled the customers about the origins of products.
