Phnom Penh (FN), June 9 – Samdech Kittipritbandit Bun Rany Hun Sen accompanied by a number of senior government officials attended the World’s Longest Hand-Woven Scarf “Krama” event on Saturday morning to weave 1,000-meter Krama, at Veal Preah Mehru, the park in front of the National Museum in Phnom Penh.

The event was commenced on February 14, 2018 under the patronage of King Nordom Sihamoni, Her Majesty Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, and Samdech Kittipritbandit Bun Rany Hun Sen.

Prime Minister Hun Sen was the last person to achieve the world's record 1,000-meter Krama weaving, but it still continues due to the remaining garment, making it longer than 1011-meter, according to volunteer youth standby at the site.

“We join together to weave the longest krama in the world,” Prime Minister said adding that “We believe we can do it to make Cambodia proud.”

World’s Longest Hand-Woven Scarf is organized by GoGo Cambodia, an organization established by youths to promote Cambodian national pride.

The event aims to uphold the pride and prestige of the nation on international stage; to conserve and promote the cultural and traditional heritage of Krama with its simplicity and identity of Khmer; to galvanize the national solidarity and unity to achieve one unique accomplishment.

Krama, used by Cambodian people of all walks of life, is a traditional Khmer garment capable of more than 60 documented uses.

Krama is worn to provide protection from sun, dust, wind, cold and rain.

In daily activities, Krama can also be used to cover body when bathing, for decorative purposes, as a hammock for children, carrying things and babies; children use them to heft kittens and puppies around, women going to market or even cooking.

Krama has also been used as a form of weaponry in Khmer martial arts. Bokator or Yuthakromkhorm fighters wrap the krama around their waists, heads and fists.

In the name of Khmer family, we promote our national pride through “The World’s Longest Hand-Woven Scarf Krama”.
