Phnom Penh (FN), June 7 – Chairman of National Election Committee (NEC) Sik Bun Hok said that the power to lead Cambodia shall be made from free and fair elections and that people have the rights to vote for a national leader, according to the NEC press release on Thursday.
The NEC added that citizens should exercise their rights and power in the National Assembly election.
According to the Chairman, free and fair elections shall comprise of five principles, including (1) universal principle, (2) free election principle, (3) direct election principle, (4) fair election principle, and (5) confidential election principle.
The Chairman stated that the NEC shall exercise its competence independently and neutrally in order to ensure free and fair elections in accordance with the principles of liberal multiparty democracy, stipulated in Article 3 of the Law on the Organization and Functioning of the NEC.
All members of the NEC shall rank in a neutral position in the performance of their duties. The NEC is a purely legal entity. Any member of the NEC, regardless of its jurisdiction, must exercise its competence independently, neutrally, with a respect to law, not accepting any direct or indirect pressure, threats or intimidation from any individual or institution.
