WASHINGTON, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Navy on Saturday commissioned the new Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) Manchester in New Hampshire.
The new warship, designated LCS 14, is the 12th LCS, and the seventh independence-variant design LCS, to join the Navy, according to a statement from the Pentagon.
The new LCS is 127 meters long, 31 meters wide, and its 70 strong crew members can operate the ship at 40 knots per hour. After its commissioning ceremony it will head to San Diego, its home port.
The U.S.S. Manchester is the second ship to its name. The first is a light cruiser that was commissioned in 1946.
According to the Pentagon, its navy has ordered 29 LCS for its littoral combat. Thirteen have been delivered, 13 are in various stages of construction and testing, and the other three are in pre-production states.
