Phnom Penh (FN), May 22 - Three military dignitaries standing for election candidates of the Cambodian People's Party (CPP) for the 6th mandate election will be temporarily suspended from their military positions. The spokesman of the Ministry of Defense said Tuesday that the suspension is in accordance to Cambodian law.

The three major military commanders are General Pol Saroeun, Commander in Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) representing Sihanouk Ville, Gen. Kun Kim, Joint Chief of Staff of RCAF representing Oddar Meanchey, and General Meas Sophea, Deputy Commander in Chief of RCAF and Army Commander, representing Preah Vihear.

Article 25 of the Law on Elections of Members of the National Assembly states that “Candidates for election as members of the National Assembly or members of the executive committee of a political party shall not be members of the National Election Committee or Election Commissions”.

Prakas 4.3 of the regulations and procedures for the Elections of Members of the National Assembly of the 6th mandate states that the government official, court official, police, military personnel, members of constitutional councils, members of supreme council of magistracy, or venerable monks could apply for a special permission or temporary suspension until the official result of the election releases by at least 7 days prior to the beginning of electoral campaign.

Elected candidate can also give up their position and that the next candidate on the list will substitute in the National Assembly.
