Phnom Penh (FN), May 20 – Phnom Penh governor Khoung Sreng on Sunday led approximately 7,000 people to celebrate “National Day of Remembrance” at Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, 15 kilometers south-west of Phnom Penh.

A play of brutal Pol Pot's regime has been showcased at the celebration and lastly, 207 monks organized a religious ceremony to pay tribute to two million Cambodians who died in the tragedy.

The Royal Government of Cambodia issued a sub-decree in 2017 to determine "May 20" as the remembrance day for over 3 million victims suffering from a tragedy occurred during the Democratic Kampuchea regime from April 17, 1975 to January 6, 1979.

May 20, 1973, was the birth of the Khmer Rouge force. They fought to control Phnom Penh on 17 April 1975.

The National Day of Remembrance is set as a public holiday, and every citizen can organize their religious or traditional ceremonies.
