JAKARTA, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Most terrorist inmates surrendered to the police on Thursday after an exchange of fire between the two sides in a jail following a riot, a senior police officer said.
Deputy Police Chief Commissioner General Syafruddin said the explosions heard were part of efforts to stabilize the situation.
"We are in the process of handling the situation," Syafruddin said.
He revealed that a total of 156 terrorist inmates allegedly got involved in the clash, most of whom have surrendered and will soon be transferred to other prisons.
Four strong explosions followed by a series of shooting were heard in the prison compound on Thursday morning, according to Xinhua photographer on site.
"There is no more negotiation," said Syafruddin.
