Phnom Penh (FN), March 7 - Cambodia respects human rights and democracy and protect citizens who act accordance to human rights principles in Cambodia, Keo Remy, Head of Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) told UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights to Cambodia Rhona Smith on Wedneday.

Keo Remy stated that if people exercise human rights in the right way, we support and protect them. Human Rights Committee went to visit prisoners, as Cambodia has human rights law and we respect them.

Rhona Smith, however, expressed concern on human right issues despite stability and peace that Cambodia has maintained.

“We urge Cambodia put human rights on the same pace as peace. If the government did not pay attention to human rights issues, it would also cause social problems in the country,” she said.

In response, Keo Remy said that Prime Minister Hun Sen promotes human rights in Cambodia as reflected through his visits to local people, factory workers, and journalists to understand their well beings and allow them to fully exercise their rights.

Keo Remy urged people not to exercise human rights as an excuse to cause problems and chaos in the country.
