Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 14 - Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol claimed that his officials did not cut off the cargo containers, simply just measure and mark the excess of overloaded.
Minister Sun said that some transport companies had taken long-haul trucks to carry or transport these containers, increasing the length that is contrary to the traffic laws in Cambodia.
Minister explained that the authority did not cut the container. We measured from the front to the back of the truck and also pointed out that the container itself was over 16 meters. According to Cambodian traffic law, 16 meters and international length of container is legal. For any country that has two lanes, 16.5 meters is legal. We also allow a container with nearly 16 meters, or a little more. However, some private companies use U.S long-haul trucks that is over 18 meters, which in contrary to international standards and traffic law, causing congestion.
Relevant officials across the country are working closely with the overloaded trucks after the order of Prime Minister Hun Sen on Feb. 9.
