Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 12 - Approximately 18,100 female workers out of 44,086 workers went to work legally in Thailand, Japan and Singapore, and 1,631 others worked in South Korea on agriculture, construction and fishery sectors in 2017, according to Ing Kantha Phavy, Minister of Women's Affairs.

The statement was made in 2017 Annual Meeting of the Women's Affairs Ministry, presided over by Prime Minister Hun Sen on Monday morning at Peace Palace Phnom Penh.

Ing Kantha Phavi said that women in Cambodia still faced social challenges, such as discrimination and violence, low levels of education and skills, family burdens and housing, and risky migration.

She added that these challenges hinder the women’s contributions which affects the capabilities of Cambodia to compete in the local and international economies.

In 2017, a total of 562 workers have been rescued and assisted to repatriate to Cambodia.
