Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 9 - The Supreme Court, on Friday, officially upheld the Appeal Court’s verdict on sentencing Cambodia National Rescue Party’s former lawmaker Um Sam An.

The Municipal Court and Appeal Court decided to sentence Om Sam An to two years and six months imprisonment and a fine of $1,000, charged of two crimes.

Um Sam An was charged with incitement causing serious chaos to social security and incitement on discrimination under Articles 495 and 496 of the Penal Code.

The charges stemmed from Facebook postings condemning the government's handling of the Border Treaty and land concessions made to Vietnam. He was arrested on April 10, 2016 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The President of the National Assembly, Heng Samrin, categorically rejected allegations that lawmakers from CNRP had their immunity status violated when they were arrested.

"I absolutely support immunity for any lawmakers who act legally, but not those who violate the law,” he said.

Two opposition lawmakers, Om Sam An and Hong Sokhour, were detained amid accusations they were involved in fomenting fraudulent public documents, such as the Border Treaty.
