Phnom Penh (FN), Feb. 7 - Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Xiong Bo has announced that the presence of Chinese investors in Cambodia help promote and contribute to Cambodia's social and economic development.
The statement was made on Wednesday afternoon at a press conference responding a number of comments expressing concern about the growing number of Chinese investors and people in Cambodia.
The ambassador said that China and Cambodia had a long history of diplomacy and China-Cambodia relation is a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership. As the world’s second largest economy, China is also a major trading partner of Cambodia.
He said that Chinese enterprises were using China's concessional loans to construct more than 3,000 kilometers of roads and seven bridges in Cambodia, where the eighth bridge will begin its construction soon besides highway from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.
The ambassador confirmed that Chinese investment and other countries in Cambodia are changing Cambodia's urban and rural life, making Cambodia one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia.
Regarding electricity issues, he said that the eight hydropower project invested by Chinese companies has contributed to address Cambodia's economic development, meeting the demand for electricity of the urban and rural population.
He also stressed that China has also provided many grants to help improve the lives of local Cambodians.
Prime Minister Hun Sen also supported the presence of Chinese investors in Cambodia. He said that influx of investment help fill in the Kingdom’s insufficient human capitals.
