Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 25 - A cambodian man was fatally poisoned by pufferfish, while the other nine people were suffered, according to the government’s announcement on Thursday.
A 36-year old fisherman died on Jan. 22 after eating a six-kilogram pufferfish that he had caught from the sea. The other nine injured are being treated in two hospitals.
All the victims are living in Koh Sdach village, Koh Kong province, more than 200 kilometers, west of Phnom Penh.
There are ten kinds of pufferfish in Cambodia and three kinds are poisonous, according to the statement released by Ministry of Health.
The ministry warned people to be aware of not eating the poisonous pufferfish although well cooked.
The symptoms of being poisoned by pufferfish, including numbness and tingling around the mouth, salivation, nausea, and vomiting within 20 minutes to two hours after eating. In the worse case, it progresses to paralysis, loss of consciousness, and respiratory failure, and can lead to death.
