(Dili, Timor-Leste): ASEAN Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn reaffirmed ASEAN’s strong support for Timor-Leste’s integration into the regional bloc while attending the groundbreaking ceremony of the International Convention Centre in Dili on Wednesday (May 20).
Speaking at the ceremony, Kao Kim Hourn congratulated the Government and people of Timor-Leste on the launch of the project, describing it as a major milestone in the country’s development journey and regional engagement.
“This groundbreaking ceremony marks an important milestone in Timor-Leste's development journey. The International Convention Centre will serve as a platform for dialogue, partnership, and regional cooperation,” he said.
The event was attended by Timor-Leste President José Manuel Ramos-Horta, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, Vice Prime Minister Francisco Kalbuadi Lay, and Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles.
Kao Kim Hourn noted that the project comes at a significant moment as Timor-Leste celebrates the 24th anniversary of the Restoration of Independence and advances its full and effective integration into ASEAN.
He stressed that investments in infrastructure supporting connectivity, dialogue, and cooperation are increasingly important amid complex geopolitical and economic developments in the region.
According to the ASEAN chief, the convention centre will enhance Timor-Leste’s ability to host regional and international meetings, attract investment and tourism, and create broader economic opportunities for local communities.
He also highlighted Timor-Leste’s preparations for greater responsibilities within ASEAN, including its intention to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2029.
“At this stage, no one has objected to your Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2029,” Kao Kim Hourn stated.
The ASEAN secretary general added that the project reflects Timor-Leste’s determination to position itself as an active participant in regional and international affairs and demonstrates its readiness to welcome the region and the world to Dili.
He expressed confidence that the International Convention Centre would become a landmark venue for regional cooperation and international engagement, while contributing to the country’s long-term development aspirations.
“ASEAN stands ready to continue supporting Timor-Leste's development and integration efforts, as we work together to build a stronger, more connected, and more inclusive ASEAN Community,” he concluded.
