(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Ministry of Commerce announced on Monday (Apr. 27) the registration of four additional products as Geographical Indications (GI), marking a significant step in strengthening Cambodia’s product identity and global recognition.
The newly registered products are Phnom Srok Golden Silk, a finely crafted textile known for its dense, glossy fibres and natural dyeing process; Koh Kong Mud Crab, harvested from mangrove areas and valued for its firm texture and naturally sweet taste; Kampong Thom Cashew Nut, recognised for its large kernels, rich aroma, and buttery flavour; and Oddar Meanchey Mango, a versatile variety with firm flesh and a balanced sweet-sour profile.
Each product is closely linked to its geographic origin, where unique environmental conditions and traditional techniques contribute to its distinct quality and reputation.
According to the ministry, GI registration provides legal protection against imitation, preserves traditional knowledge, promotes sustainable practices and tourism, and enhances export opportunities while supporting international recognition.
This initiative reflects Cambodia’s continued commitment to protecting its cultural heritage and strengthening the global competitiveness of its local products.
