(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said that the construction of the Funan Techo Canal reflects the Royal Government’s commitment to o reviving and expanding Cambodia’s historic inland waterway network.
Speaking on Saturday (Apr. 11) at the groundbreaking ceremony for Section II of the canal, the premier underscored that the project is inspired by ancient trade routes and aims to strengthen national self-reliance across multiple sectors.
Samdech Thipadei underlined that the project’s main objectives are to elevate national prestige, strengthen Cambodia’s capabilities, improve citizens’ livelihoods, and enhance the country’s resilience. The canal is not only a symbol of present and future development, but also a continuation of the economic and trade pathways established by Cambodia’s ancestors, he added.
“Historically, canals existed in this region. Angkor Borei was once a major trade center, connected to the world through waterways, including Óc Eo,” he noted. “This project builds on that legacy. Our ancestors recognized the area’s potential, and today we continue their vision to strengthen Cambodia, ensure ownership over livelihoods, and enhance national sovereignty.”
He added that improving connectivity across water, land, and air has long been a core government policy aimed at boosting independence and economic strength.
The Funan Techo Canal will connect the Mekong River to Cambodia’s coastline, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. The canal is expected to span nearly 180 kilometres, cost approximately USD 1.7 billion, and be completed by 2028.
Originally initiated by Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the project is now being carried forward under Prime Minister Hun Manet. Most of the investment comes from domestic sources, with additional funding from China Road and Bridge Corporation.
