(Phnom Penh): Suos Yara, Spokesperson for the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), stated that the peaceful resolution of border issues between Cambodia, Viet Nam, and Laos conducted in accordance with international law and without the use of force, serves as a model for resolving border issues with Thailand.

Speaking in a press conference on Sunday (Feb. 8), Suos Yara explained that the 1904 and 1907 treaties, commonly known as the Franco–Siam Treaties or conventions, form an important legal basis for border demarcation not only for Cambodia, but also for Laos. He noted that the consensus reached by the leaders of Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam to complete remaining border demarcation in line with international law reflects a principled and constructive approach.

He underscored that regardless of disagreements or tensions, neighbouring countries cannot change their geographic realities and must continue to coexist. In this context, he said Thailand should look to the example set by Cambodia, Viet Nam, and Laos, which have addressed border issues through peaceful technical processes, respect for international legal principles, the use of maps, and established bilateral mechanisms.

According to the CPP spokesperson, this approach represents a positive model that reassures the public and strengthens confidence, particularly at a time when parts of the global order face disruption. He added that despite such challenges, no country has abandoned adherence to international law.

Suos Yara further stated that the shared consensus among the leaders of Cambodia, Laos, and Viet Nam sends a clear message to their citizens that border issues will not be resolved through force, but through law and cooperation, ensuring lasting peace and well-being for the people.
