Phnom Penh (FN), Jan. 9 - Sieng Sok, Phnom Penh Municipal Court’s Deputy Prosecutor, summoned Chea Mony, former leader of the Free Trade Union of Workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC), to appear at the court in the morning of January 22, 2018.
Chea Mony was charged of “incitement” regarding complaint filed by 120 unions and union coalition representing by lawyers of plaintiff, Dara Sopanha and Keto Sovandy.
Chea Mony, through a foreign radio, requested the European Union and U.S. to sanction Cambodia in the hope that the government would be suffering, thus seek negotiation to solve political crisis with the main opposition party.
According to the complaint, the largest unions have asked the court to punish Chea Mony in accordance with the law and claim compensation of $1 million.
Unions and union coalition, representing hundreds thousands of workers in Cambodia, said that if the EU and U.S. sanctions Cambodia, it will directly affect the livelihoods of millions of workers, particularly those in the garment sector.
