(Phnom Penh): Canadian Ambassador to Cambodia Christian DesRoches pledged to promote and attract more Canadian investment to the Kingdom.
The ambassador paid a courtesy call on Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen on Tuesday morning (Dec. 2) at the Senate.
According to the Senate Spokesperson Chea Thyrith, Ambassador Christian DesRoches pledged to further promote Canadian investors to come to Cambodia. He emphasised that whenever people talk about investment in Cambodia, they think of ABA Bank, a Canadian-owned bank, which stands as one concrete example of successful investment. He affirmed he will continue encouraging more Canadian investors to invest in the Kingdom.
During the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen warmly welcomed the Canadian ambassador and his delegation, noting that the ambassador’s presence would help further strengthen diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Samdech Techo also expressed appreciation for Canada’s decision to reopen its resident diplomatic mission in Cambodia, which he said clearly reflected Canada’s attention and commitment to enhancing relations with the Kingdom.
On this occasion, the Canadian ambassador thanked Samdech Techo Hun Sen for allowing him and his delegation to pay a courtesy call. He highlighted the steady progress in Cambodia–Canada relations and shared that he himself has a personal fondness for Cambodia, having studied the Khmer language and learned to speak it.
He expressed hope that his presence in Cambodia would help advance bilateral cooperation, particularly in the economic and trade sectors. He also noted that bilateral trade between the two countries has seen remarkable growth in recent years, aligning with the strengthening of political and diplomatic ties.
For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen welcomed the ambassador’s remarks, especially the growth of bilateral trade between Cambodia and Canada, which recently surpassed USD 1 billion. Samdech Techo stressed that achieving such trade volume between two geographically distant countries is the result of strong commitment and efforts from both sides.
The Senate president hoped that Cambodia and Canada would continue expanding cooperation to further deepen their long-standing historical relationship, especially by encouraging more Canadian investment in the kingdom.
During the meeting, the Canadian ambassador once again extended his appreciation to Samdech Techo, noting that he has long admired Samdech Techo’s leadership even before coming to Cambodia, and has studied his life story and resilience.
Lastly, Samdech Techo Hun Sen wished the Canadian ambassador every success in his mission in Cambodia.
