Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 27 - Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, on Wednesday said that Cambodia continued to export to the European Union in 2018, and he confirmed that the EU already signed contracts to import products from Cambodia.
The statement was made in response to former opposition party's effort to interrupt Cambodian economy.
Recently, Kem Monovithya, Kem Sokha's daughter, and other former leaders of the main opposition party continued to urge the European Union to impose economic sanctions on Cambodia.
They proposed the EU to cut off tax preferences and shut down imports from Cambodia. These acts will affect the livelihood of millions of garment workers and Cambodian economy as a whole.
EU is a major market for Cambodia, and all of Cambodia's goods, except arms, are exported with preferential tariffs. Cambodian garments, footwear and rice products are exported to Europe for billions of dollars annually.
In 2017, Cambodia exported goods through a preferential trading system with the EU and the U.S, amounting to $9.5 billion, an increase of 19.22% compared to 2016, which was $8 billion.
