MANILA, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Two moderate quateks, one of magnitude 4.8 and another of magnitude 3.8, hit northern Philippine main island of Luzon on Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

In a report, the Phivolcs said the shallow, magnitude 4.8 quake struck four km northeast of Kayapa town in Nueva Vizcaya province, north of Manila, with a depth of six km.

It said the tremor, which was tectonic in origin, was felt strongest in the mountain resort Baguio City where many tourists are vacationing for the holidays.

The second magnitude 3.8 quake struck at 12:17 p.m., five km southwest of Kayapa town with a depth of one km.

The Phivolcs said it does not expect both quakes to cause damage or aftershocks.

In July 1990, a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Northern and Central Luzon. Its epicentre was recorded in Nueva Ecija. Baguio City was the hardest hit with at least 1,200 people killed. It was considered one of the most destructive quakes in the Philippines in recent years.
