(Phnom Penh): Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen recalled that among all Cambodian political figures returning from abroad after the 1991 Paris Peace Agreements, only Son Sann and his group did not receive housing upon their return to Cambodia.
Speaking during the 4th Session of the 5th Legislature of the Senate on Friday (Oct. 24), Samdech Techo reflected on the post-agreement period that marked Cambodia’s transition toward peace and national reconciliation.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen recounted that Son Sann once criticized him in front of the late king father, saying, “My two houses were all taken by your people.” This prompted Samdech Techo to clarify that it was not he who forced citizens out of their homes, but the Khmer Rouge. Many houses had been seized and later sold two or three times already, and he should not be blamed for the eviction of people caused by the Khmer Rouge regime.
Because Son Sann had scolded him in front of the late king father, Samdech Techo Hun Sen further said, “Among the returnees from abroad, only Son Sann and a few of his supporters were not given houses. Later, they wrote letters to Chea Sim, demanding more houses. I refused. For someone like Ieng Mouly, I agreed, because housing arrangements were already ready for everyone.”
Samdech Techo Hun Sen also noted that a new house had been prepared for Khieu Samphan, yet Khieu Samphan refused to take it. Son Sann then requested that same house intended for Khieu Samphan, but Samdech Techo again rejected the request.
