Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 13 - Three garment union groups in Cambodia, on Wednesday, requested the European Union and the United States to continue trade agreement with Cambodia.

Cambodian garment unions expressed concern that access to vital European Union and U.S. trade preferences could be under threat following the dissolution of the main opposition party under Prime Minister Hun Sen’s government.

The union leaders believed that garment industry jobs will be at stake if the international community decided to impose sanctions on Cambodia.

"As leaders of the Independent Union Federation that is working with non-political workers, we are deeply concerned about this issue, which can have a devastating effect on Cambodia, especially in textiles, garments, and footwear sectors,” according to the unions' statement.

At the same time, Cambodian garment unions also proposed two points to the European Union and the United States, including continuing to import clothing and footwear, and help to purchase more products from Cambodia.
