(Phnom Penh): As of the morning of August 19, 2025, the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border, particularly in Military Region 4 and Military Region 5 of Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, and Banteay Meanchey provinces, remains calm and steady. Cambodian military forces stand strong and fully vigilant in fulfilling their duties.
Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, spoke on Tuesday morning (Aug. 19) at a press briefing on the implementation of the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire.
She added that Cambodian armed forces firmly respect and strictly implement the ceasefire reached on 28 July 2025 as well as the 13-point Agreed Minutes adopted at the extraordinary meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on 7 August 2025 under observation of Malaysia, the United States of America and the People’s Republic of China.
Cambodia continues to demand that the Thai side abide by these agreements, including the release and return of 18 Cambodian soldiers who were unlawfully detained by Thai forces after the ceasefire came into effect, an incident that has now persisted for 20 days.
The Ministry of National Defense, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF), and the international community are jointly calling on Thailand to adhere to international law and promptly return the detained soldiers so they may reunite with their families, who anxiously await their return.
The Royal Government, the armed forces, and the people of Cambodia stand united in unwavering defense of the nation's territory, dignity, and sovereignty. The Ministry’s spokesperson reiterated that full implementation of the ceasefire by both parties would foster a positive atmosphere, paving the way for peace, stability, and normalization of bilateral relations between the two countries.
