(Phnom Penh): 2,569 Cambodian monks from 18 pagodas, joined by hundreds of laypeople, marched from the historic Wat Phnom to the Independence Monument in a Dhamma Yatra calling for a permanent ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand.

Led by the Kingdom’s highest Buddhist leaders, Samdech Preah Abhisiri Sugandha Mohasangharajah Dhipati Bour Kry, Great Supreme Patriarch of Dhammayuttikanikaya of Cambodia, Samdech Preah Maha Sumedhadhiraj Om Limheng, Supreme Patriarch of the Mahanikaya; and Samdech Preah Maha Ariya Vongsa Bandit Yon Seng Yeath, the marchers urged an end to hostilities and the immediate release of 18 Cambodian soldiers currently held in Thailand.

Recognizing the vital importance of peace, the supreme patriarchs of both Buddhist orders appealed to the Thai side to honor a permanent ceasefire and to release all 18 Cambodian soldiers currently being held captive. This appeal was made in the spirit of both nations sharing the same Theravāda Buddhist faith, and for the noble cause of bringing well-being, safety, and harmony to the Cambodian people and the world at large.

The supreme patriarchs voiced strong support for Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, for his steadfast role in assisting the Royal Government and encouraging the Armed Forces to defend Cambodia’s territorial integrity. They also commended Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet for his commitment to resolving the Cambodia–Thailand border dispute through peaceful, lawful means.

Gratitude was extended to all frontline soldiers for their sacrifices in safeguarding the nation, with heartfelt tribute paid to those who gave their lives in defence of Cambodia’s sovereignty.
