(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, said that on 10 August 2025, a group of 14 foreign defence attachés from nine countries will travel to Oddar Meanchey province to conduct an on-site inspection at the border and refugee areas, following Cambodia’s full implementation of the ceasefire between Cambodian and Thai armed forces.
It should be noted that the Extraordinary Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting in Malaysia was convened to implement the agreements reached on 28 July 2025, which include the continuation of the ceasefire, non-movement of troops, and the establishment of an ASEAN observer team led by Malaysia to monitor the ceasefire’s implementation. Both sides pledged to reduce tensions, prevent the spread of misinformation, and appoint Regional Border Committees (RBC) to facilitate the implementation of the ceasefire. The Cambodian side also requested the release of Cambodian soldiers currently detained by the Thai military.
The spokesperson spoke on Sunday (Aug. 10) during a press conference.
“On Sunday, 10 August 2025, the foreign defence attaché corps to the Kingdom of Cambodia, stationed both inside and outside Cambodia, departed from Phnom Penh to Oddar Meanchey province to inspect the actual situation and refugee accommodations, following Cambodia’s full participation in the ceasefire. A total of 14 attachés from nine countries joined this visit," the spokesperson underscored.
According to the spokesperson, the nine countries represented are Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Laos, and Viet Nam.
She added that this border inspection mission, carried out by defence attachés from the nine countries, was led by Phat Vibolsopheak, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Policy and Foreign Affairs and Director of the Department of International Relations at the Ministry of National Defence, together with several senior officers from the Ministry and the Royal Cambodian Army, to ensure the smooth execution of the mission. The participation of these partner countries reflects a shared commitment to ensuring the ceasefire’s success and longevity, with the ultimate goal of restoring peace, stability, cooperation, and development for the peoples of both nations.
