(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defence, expressed strong hope that the upcoming Extraordinary Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC), to be held at a neutral location in Malaysia from 4-7 August 2025, will proceed smoothly and fruitfully. She also stated that Cambodia has requested the participation of the US, China, and Malaysia to join and help accelerate the establishment of a monitoring mechanism.
Maly Sochatea spoke on Friday (Aug. 1) during a press conference on the current status of Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire.
The spokesperson stressed that Cambodia has reaffirmed its strong commitment to fully and effectively implement the ceasefire between Cambodian and Thai forces. She urged for the swift establishment of a monitoring mechanism, to be coordinated by Malaysia as the ASEAN Chair, with active participation from ASEAN member states and other interested partners to help both Cambodia and Thailand in monitoring, reporting, and ensuring successful implementation of the ceasefire.
“Cambodia has agreed to Thailand’s proposal to convene the Extraordinary GBC Meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and we extend our deep gratitude to Malaysia for facilitating and providing the venue,” the spokesperson underscored.
Cambodia has also requested that Malaysia, the US, and China attend the meeting as observers, as these three countries played a significant role in facilitating the Cambodia–Thailand ceasefire on 28 July 2025.
“We strongly hope this meeting will be held in a constructive and fruitful manner,” the spokesperson concluded.
