(Phnom Penh): Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defence, condemned the violence against Cambodian citizens by Thai extremist groups in Thailand, calling the acts “inhumane and barbaric.” Cambodia has urged Thai authorities to take immediate action and deliver justice for the victims.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday (July 28), Maly Socheata revealed that over the past five days, more than 400,000 Cambodian workers have returned home, with an additional 150,000 expected today.
“We have received numerous reports of beatings and threats against our nationals by Thai extremist groups. These actions are illegal and intolerable. Cambodia calls on Thai authorities to urgently protect Cambodians in Thailand, hold the perpetrators accountable, and ensure justice and transparency,” the spokesperson stated.
The armed conflict between Cambodia and Thailand broke out on the morning of July 24, 2025, at the Ta Moan Thom temple area in Oddar Meanchey Province, after Thai forces launched the first attack. The clashes have since spread along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
As of now, 39,828 Cambodian families have been displaced due to the conflict.
