(Phnom Penh): On the evening of July 23, 2025, various Thai media outlets, including The Nation newspaper, reported that Thailand had decided to downgrade diplomatic ties with Cambodia, recall its ambassador from Phnom Penh, and expel the Cambodian ambassador from Bangkok.
In response, Cambodian government has decided to downgrade diplomatic relations with Thailand to the lowest level—Second Charge d’Affaires—and ordering all other Cambodian diplomatic staff at the Cambodian Embassy in Bangkok to return home. The Thai diplomatic mission in Phnom Penh need to do the same.
The move came after Thailand recalled its ambassador from Cambodia and expelled Cambodia’s ambassador in Bangkok, citing unclear and unfounded reasons related to a landmine incident.
Thailand’s unsubstantiated allegations are seen as an attempt to shift blame onto Cambodia, making its diplomatic actions appear unjustified. This move demonstrates a lack of willingness to resolve disputes through dialogue and instead opting for confrontation.
