MEXICO CITY, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a powerful 7.1-magnitude quake that rumbled through central Mexico last month has climbed to 361, officials said on Sunday, as rescuers continue to search for eight missing people.

Among the victims, 220 people died in the capital Mexico City, where the seismic jolts tumbled at least 38 buildings to the ground on Sept. 19, the head of the national civil protection agency, Luis Felipe Puente, said in a tweet.

The other 141 victims died in surrounding and nearby states, mainly Morelos, Puebla and Mexico State.

The rescue efforts "continue intensely" and are focused on a building along the city's centric Alvaro Obregon Avenue, where eight people were reported missing, Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said Sunday at a press conference.

However, there is little hope of finding more survivors 13 days after the quake.

Several buildings that collapsed or were severely damaged were built within two years, leading authorities to launch some 136 investigations into the developers.
