Phnom Penh (FN), September 30 - The Indian Embassy and Indians living in Cambodia are spending September 30 working to clear the public space around Gandhi's statue next to the Phnom Penh's Dragon Bridge Park, in preparation for 148th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, which is on the 2nd of October, 2017.

Ratcha Kumamo, Chargé d'Affaires of the Indian Embassy, prepared the history behind cleaning campaign, also known as the Swachh Bharat campaign.

The campaign was organized by Prime Minister Narindamudi in India, where there is a great push to clean India. During the last three years, India has hosted many events which focus on cleaning up cities.

On September 15, 2017, the President of India established a nation-wide sanitation campaign called "Swachhta Hi Seva", Razak said.

The campaign was designed to encourage more citizens to engage directly with Indian institutions in maintaining hygiene (clean India) by volunteering for two weeks until October 2, 2017.

He said that in order to disseminate positive messages to the people in the community, as well as showing Indian solidarity, the Indian Embassy, ​​along with the Indian community in Phnom Penh, plan to clean up on September 30, 2017 around the statue of Mahat Gandhi with the Dragon Bridge Park. The public square was selected because of its proximity to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

On this occasion, officials and staff members of the Indian embassy and citizens of the the Indian community also swore statements of Swachhta (cleanliness) in front of Mahatma Gandhi.
