KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- At least 25 people have died in a fire at a religious school in Kuala Lumpur early Thursday morning, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department said in a statement.

A victim list released by the authorities shows that 22 of the deceased were students while three others were religious teachers.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene after they received a fire alert at around 5:41 a.m. (local time), though the fire has been put out, a spokesman said, quoted by state news agency Bernama.

They are further identifying the actual number of the killed and wounded, and some injured people have been sent to hospital, the spokesman added.

Public videos posted on Twitter showed that a three-story building of the religious school was engulfed in raging fire before the firefighters' arrival.

It is not yet known what has caused the fire, but a report by the Star newspaper said fire safety measures at unregistered and private schools were a concern to the authorities.

According to the report, 211 fires have been recorded at these facilities since 2015.
