Phnom Penh (FN), September 7 - The Cambodian Permanent Mission to the United Nations and Other IOs in Geneva issued a statement that Kem Sokha's arrest is a right legal measure, but has been unfairly accused.
The statement added that the government's achievement has been overlooked.
A statement was made yesterday reacting to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights official, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, expressed concern over the arrest of Kem Sokha, Cambodia National Rescue Party’s (CNRP) president, and criticized the shutdown of some media and NGOs.
The Permanent Mission of Cambodia explained that Kem Sokha's arrest was based on the alleged offense and stated that, in accordance to Cambodian law, the Cambodian Supreme Court has the right to arrest, prosecute, and detain perpetrators without lifting the immunity.
"The enforcement of the law by the legal authorities in accordance with legal procedures and the courts above these individuals do not have anything to do with the closure of the media and a small number of non-governmental organizations," stated the Permanent Mission of Cambodia.
The Cambodian Permanent Mission reflected that the public accused the government of being unfair when arresting an opposition leader or shut down NGOs; however, they would appreciate the government’s work if the government arrested its own cabinet or government members.
