Phnom Penh (FN), August 21 - Kong Vibol, Director General of the General Department of Taxation (GDT), rejected the accusation made by The Cambodia Daily on Sunday, through RFA, regarding tax payment requested by the government is just a politically motivated.
“Please do not clean yourself by accusing the government of politicizing this tax case; if you want to continue your work, please pay taxes to the state,” said Kong Vibol.
“Americans are aware that you need to pay tax in the United States on business. You will face administrative penalties and criminal charges like imprisonment if you don’t pay tax,” he added.
The rejection was made following the Daily’s current owner, Deborah Krisher-Steele accused the government for intently implement the foreclosure of her company.
The Cambodia Daily is facing the prospect of being shut down and having assets confiscated if the state fails to receive back taxes by September 4, 2017, according to H.E. Kong Vibol.
After documents from the General Department of Taxation leaked, Ou Chanrith, a member of Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) posted a message on Facebook that Cambodia Daily Newspaper Company alleging that the media outlet had failed to pay taxes for over a decade, racking up a whopping 25,756,015,695 riels, approximately 6 million US dollars, in back taxes.
