Phnom Penh (FN), August 3 - The National Election Committee (NEC) has no authority to ask the National Assembly to amend the electoral vote for Cambodians who live abroad, according to Sik Bun Hok, chairman of NEC.
His comments were in response to requests from citizens as well as urging from civil society groups.
"I would like to clarify some of the issues raised in relation to registering voters outside the country. The NEC is a constitutionally-mandated act and according to the law, it has no right to amend the election laws," said Sik Bun Hok in a Consultation Meeting to update voter list and voter registration on Thursday.
"If people still insist NEC to amend the exiting laws, it is the same as urging NEC to go against the law. Only lawmakers have the right to amend the law," he clarified.
He urged all Cambodians to register and vote for 2018 election as there are estimates of 2 million unregistered citizens.
Voter registration for the July 2018 election will take place from September 1 to November 9, 2017.
