Phnom Penh (FN), May 20 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that on the basis of social justice, the whole country must continue to remember the roots of past tragedies to ensure that the most difficult experiences of the past contribute to a better future for Cambodia.
The premier spoke on Monday (May 20) at the conference on the “Future of Cambodia Without Genocide” at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).
Samdech Thipadei underscored, "On the basis of social justice, we must continually recall the roots of past tragedies to allow the most difficult experiences of the past to contribute to a better defence of Cambodia's future. At this point, I would like to underlined the combination of complex factors that led to Cambodia falling into a genocidal regime and three decades of civil war."
Samdech Thipadei added that when Cambodia lost internal unity among different political groups and lack agreement within the national army, it faced foreign interference, potentially losing its independence and control over its national destiny.
The suffering of the Cambodian people due to foreign intervention, combined with internal social injustice manifested through the "gap between rich and poor," has caused social tensions and hatred, promoting the emergence of the extremist ideology of the Khmer Rouge regime.
"Our society must constantly be reminded of these lessons to ensure that we do not walk the same path. Additionally, we must adjust or adapt our social situation whenever necessary to prevent extremist ideology from taking root. We cannot allow any component of society to re-emerge from the extremist political culture by inciting class struggle, hatred against the authorities, regime change contrary to democratic principles, and racism,” Samdech Thipadei further underscored.
On the occasion, Prime Minister Hun Manet added that the mistakes of the past urge us to unite the Khmer nation firmly and build a better society for all. It is the duty of the government to promote good governance and social justice to ensure a stable environment in the management system as well as in national development.
