Seoul (FN), May 18 – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced that the Funan Techo Canal Project will start groundbreaking soon, speaking on Saturday (May 18) during his meeting with the Cambodian community in Seoul, the Republic of Korea.
"In the past, I announced that the Funan Techo Canal would start groundbreaking at the end of this year or early next year. However, it will start groundbreaking as soon as possible without further delay," the premier underscored.
Samdech Thipadei thanked Cambodian citizens living in South Korea as well as the people around the world for supporting the Funan Techo Canal Project.
"This project does not belong to Samdech Techo or the Hun family. I have already clarified that the Hun family made a small contribution to participate in and encourage citizens to support this project. The success of the project is due to the support of Cambodian citizens both inside and outside the country. We need to safeguard this project," the premier continued.
""We must collaborate to alleviate poverty and propel Cambodia towards prosperity. This canal will furnish independence and vitality for future development, requiring contributions from citizens both domestically and abroad," Samdech Thipadei added.
Please be informed The Funan Techo canal is 180 km long from Prek Takeo of the Mekong River, through the Prek Ta Ek of the Bassac River, then into Prek Ta Hing of the Bassac River, Koh Thom district, and extends to the Kep province passes through four provinces, including Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep, with a total population of 1.6 million people living on both side of the waterway. The construction of the new waterway project is estimated to cost USD 1.7 billion and take about four years to complete.
