Phnom Penh (FN), July 20 - Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior (MoI), will allow members from the Situation Room for Elections (SRE) to meet with representatives of the Interior Ministry.
He granted permission for the meeting after the group responsible for organizing the SRE submitted a request to explain the SRE to the MoI.
“Secretary of State at MoI, Pol Lim, will arrange the meeting, however, a specific date and time has not yet been confirmed,” said Khieu Sopheak.
On July 4, 2017, Sar Kheng issued a letter ordering COMFREL and NICFEC to stop the activities of SRE, which he deemed to be illegal, and focus their actions in accordance to the Law on Associations and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
The MoI stepped in after Prime Minister Hun Sen suggested that the activities of SRE go under investigation because he worried that the group’s statement may affect the image of Cambodia's election.
