Phnom Penh (FN), July 10 – The National Assembly (N.A) has fully adopted a proposed amendment of the political parties’ law with a majority vote, despite absences of opposition lawmakers.
The enactment will be submitted to the Senate to review and consult.
The enactment of the proposed law was chaired by N.A president Heng Samrin, with the participation of 66 CPP lawmakers.
The amendment was proposed by the CPP and signed by more than 30 of the ruling party’s lawmakers.
The amendment’s purpose is to ban any political parties who collaborate with a convict for the interest of party.
The new amendment stipulates that all political parties shall not use voice messaging, portraits, letters, or actions of convicts; or hold open agreement or conspire with convicts to the benefit its own political party.
Following the enactment, Cambodia National Rescue Party’s lawmakers released a statement regarding two reasons for boycotting the plenary session:
“The proposed law restricted individual and political party’s right as well as political rivals; the amendment is not in accordance to the rule of law, and violated the principles of multi-party democracy, ensured by the constitution of the Cambodia,” they stated.
“CNRP’s lawmakers do not support the enactment and demand that all the acts on Proposed Law Amendment on Political Parties and Law on the Amendment of Political Parties be halted for the sake of national interest and unity,” the statement added.
